Chapter 1 — Exploring: Entering the World of Secondary Science

Chapter 1 of the Class 9 Science NCERT textbook, "Exploration", introduces the secondary stage of science, emphasising deep exploration through models, precise language, mathematics, laws, theories, and estimation rather than just memorising facts.

• Science as Exploration — At the secondary stage, science shifts from memorising facts to deep exploration: understanding how observations lead to measurements, how models are built, and how ideas are tested, revised, or discarded over time.
• Building Scientific Models — Models are simplified representations of reality that deliberately ignore certain details to answer a specific question, such as treating a moving car as a point or ignoring air resistance when studying a falling object.
• Precise Shared Language — Science relies on a common, precise language of terms, symbols, and SI units, with mathematics as a way to express relationships, so scientists worldwide can compare results and build ideas together.
• Laws, Theories, Prediction — A law describes a regular pattern, a theory explains why it occurs from evidence, and a principle is a broad guiding idea. Prediction and estimation then test ideas and check whether results are reasonable.
